eDressMe founder and CEO Joanne Stoner uses glitzfests like the Oscars to boost her New York City-based design business in a novel way:

Within 48 hours of the Academy Awards' conclusion, Stoner has replicas of the show's most eye-catching dresses designed and in production for sale on her company's website.

Stoner picks dresses for "interpretation" with an eye toward the popularity of the star wearing them, their reflection of current seasonal trends, and their adaptability to the average consumer's needs. eDressMe's versions cost a few hundred dollars each - not the thousands a custom-couture original would run.

"The dresses are inspired by the Oscar red-carpet dresses, but there is a significant difference because of fabric and materials used," Stoner said.

Stoner, who launched her company in 2004, said she often finds herself drawn to the originality of new designers' creations. By making similar versions of their work more widely available, she sees eDressMe as helping to pave the way for mass-market demand for new styles.

Emerald gown from Atonement movie:

The biggest current fashion buzz surrounds a fabulous emerald gown worn by Keira Knightley during a scene in the award-winning movie Atonement.

Created by British costume designer Jacqueline Durran, the sleeveless, floor-sweeping dress - a composite of three shades of green - is the latest hot topic in fashion news. It was voted best film costume of all time in a poll taken by InStyle magazine and British TV network Sky Movies.

Knockoffs are already available for the masses. A darker-green, fairly similar rendition by Faviana in sizes 0 to 12 is $238 at eDressMe

With the absence of a grand-scale blockbuster nominee and the only recently ended bitterness of the writers' strike, there was inevitably some question as to whether these twin dark clouds (and Sunday's rainy weather) would cast a pall over fashion and film's biggest night of the year. Well, the answer is yes and no.

Undeniably, it was a carpet populated by subdued, dark-hued dresses on a gaggle of style-setting A-listers: Tilda Swinton in a stark, one-sleeved, black Lanvin gown; Amy Adams in a jewel-toned Proenza Schouler strapless number; Penélope Cruz in navy, feather-trimmed Chanel Haute Couture; Hilary Swank in jet-beaded Atelier Versace; a beautiful and pregnant Cate Blanchett in purple Dries Van Noten; Laura Linney in Michael Kors; Jennifer Garner in a flamenco-skirted, strapless Oscar de la Renta; and Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga and L'Wren Scott diamonds.

Ultimately, of course, this is still a celebration. That was reflected in what turned out to be an extremely popular color: red. Anne Hathaway pulled it off best in an asymmetrical draped gown by Marchesa with a spray of sculpted rosettes that set off her porcelain skin to lovely effect. The design duo scored another hit with Jessica Alba in a feather-trimmed gown in deep burgundy that deftly disguised her third-trimester state. Katherine Heigl wore a cherry shade with old-Hollywood curls and matching lips. When it came to the actress with the most to celebrate, though, the lady wasn't in red (or black for that matter). Marion Cotillard accepted her Best Actress award in a mermaid-inspired, white-and-gold halter dress made for her by Jean Paul Gaultier. It was the most fashion-forward choice of the evening and will doubtless have both fans and detractors. Somehow, we doubt Cotillard will lose sleep over any of that.

From Detroit to New York: Shane and Shawn Ward

Time and again, it has been said that one must suffer for beauty. With the summer season coming to an end, finding a shoe that is not only sexy, but also comfortable is almost unheard of in the glamorous world of fashion. With all the different looks of stilettos, platforms, and wedges, etc.-the beautifully constructed shoes that make our legs look so great are misleading in how they actually make us feel.

Thankfully, Shane and Shawn Ward, a twin design duo, launched in 2003- Detny by Shane Shawn and then Shane Shawn shoes (a higher-end collection). Hailing from Detroit, MI and now residing in New York City (hence the name Detny), Shane designs the collections with their own patented luxury liner, and Shawn handles all the business aspects.

Their goal is to construct aesthetically beautiful shoes for fashion-loving jetsetters. Designing for both men and women, they have perfected the concept of modeling a shoe that not only looks wonderful, but also wears comfortably. All shoes are insulated with performance EVA foam, (sometimes used as a shock absorber in tennis shoes*), lightweight rubber and arch-support technologies that you find in running shoes.

With backgrounds in mechanical engineering and industrial design, it was unforeseeable that one day they would venture on a career path that would lead into footwear. Shawn, who studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, interned at Chrysler and was sure he would work in the automotive world until retirement. Shane, who also attended the same school, studied Industrial Engineering. In this program, he learned to design everything from cars, to furniture and flashlights and held an internship designing furniture and then another designing auto show exhibits for General Motors. It was through a referral from a friend of Shane’s that their career paths changed.

“A couple of months before I graduated from Michigan, a buddy of mine that went to school with me was working at Adiddas. So he called me and said, ‘Hey, do you want to come out and interview?’ so I went out for the interview in Portland, OR and fell in love with it. So that is how we got into shoes,” says Shane.

Starting out, Shane and Shawn designed for the likes of Adidas, Puma, and Converse, etc. through their freelance consulting business SW2DESIGN. They decided to start Detny because, “we wanted to actually design shoes that we wanted to wear because most of the shoes we were designing were majority athletic. We liked the feel and fit of those athletic shoes, but wanted to do something that we would wear and the girls around us would wear,” explains Shawn.

Not only can these two “talk the talk,” they can definitely “walk the walk.” Self-titled “Boardroom Rockstars” their rock-star personas are daringly innovative, sexy, and cool. So, it’s only natural that their shoes have already captured the attention of high-profile celebrities such as Jessica Simpson, Jamie Foxx, P. Diddy, Green Day, and Black Eyed Peas, to name a few.

Their very charismatic personalities make it possible for them to successfully market their brands directly via in-store appearances, annual parties in the Hamptons, and celebrity gift suites at award shows, such as the Grammy’s and very soon the ESPY Awards.

The Detny and Shane Shawn collections are refreshingly stylish and cutting edge in design and concept. With looks ranging from day to night, casual to elegant, the line definitely befits a jetsetters lifestyle. Already carried in select Macy’s and Nordstrom’s department stores, the shoes can also be found at specialty boutiques around the country and on online stores ShoeMall.com, and Shoes.com.
